Zanzabar Nightclub will wrap up nearly 14 years as one of Hawaii's premier entertainment venues this weekend. The club, which opened for business in the center of Waikiki in 1999 will close after hosting nearly 2.5 million customers. "It was an exciting adventure for many years," said Jim Boersema, Managing Partner for the ownership group. "During all those years, a large number of well known celebrities from both the United States and Asia visited Zanzabar and the club appeared on national television show episodes three times. All nightclubs seem to have a lifespan and in Honolulu most clubs last two-four years. By comparison, Zanzabar has been around a long time. Sales have dropped off somewhat in the past year," said Boersema, "the most important reason for closing is that the club is badly in need of a major renovation if it is to remain competitive. Many facets of the club are badly worn or outdated. But a renovation would entail closing down temporarily and borrowing a lot of money. That, in turn, is dependent upon obtaining a new long-term lease, which we have been unable to accomplish. So, the ownership group, all of whom are getting older, has decided that rather than start over again, they will move on in their lives to other ventures. Our sincere appreciation does go out to all of the people who worked at Zanzabar these past 14 years and to the many wonderful people who visited the nightclub for their enjoyment. We hope this place will remain in their memory."The space where Zanzabar sits was originally made into a nightclub when the Nova 21 Group from Japan signed a lease in the Fall of 1988. They built out the Maharaja Nightclub for about $5.8 million and opened it in May, 1989. The Maharaja closed in late 1998 and six months later Jim Boersema signed a new lease. He brought in other partners and they spent about $1.4 million in renovation and changed the name to Zanzabar.
